Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences Equal in Status but Different in Kind

Fachhochschule Osnabrück, like most other Universities of Applied Sciences in Germany, was founded in 1971 and thus represents a relatively young type of institution in the field of higher education. By now, however, more than 35 % of all graduates come from this kind of university.

What primarily attracts students to this type of institution is a shorter route to their later profession. Studies at Universities of Applied Sciences are highly practice-oriented. Tight organisation of the degree courses, teaching in small groups, examinations throughout the students' studies which count towards the final degree and a choice of subjects that is oriented towards the needs of professional practice permit shorter average study periods than those which are normally required at traditional universities. This does not mean a lack of academic or scientific research which is also primarily directed towards practical requirements.

Osnabrück: A City for Young People

Osnabrück is a town of 170,000 inhabitants in the federal state of Lower Saxony. Situated in the north-western part of Germany not far from the Dutch border it nestles among two low mountain ranges. It's a two hour drive to the beautiful coastal area of the North Sea with its dikes, beaches and picturesque little harbours. Exciting Amsterdam to the west and the bustling town of Hamburg to the north-east can be reached within the same time. But Osnabrück itself has a lot to offer. At every turn in its city centre you come across signs of its 1,200 year old history. The city of the Peace of Westphelia of 1648 which ended the Thirty-Years' War can boast of a historic city centre, where carefully restored buildings house shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. In Osnabrück, modern life takes place in historic settings.

As a city with a technology-oriented future, many innovative and well known international concerns in the hi-tech, engineering, food and logistics sectors are located here

Osnabrück offers everything that makes a student's life enjoyable: More than 400 pubs, bars and restaurants cater for all tastes and serve a variety of meals which range from traditional to exotic and from fast food to vegetarian. Cultural events play an important role in this city on the river 'Hase': Several theatres stage dramas, operas and ballets, various museums offer changing art exhibitions and a variety of festivals range from modern (the European Media Art Festival) to traditional (the 'Mai-Woche'). Very popular among students is the 'Lagerhalle', an old warehouse which now serves as a meeting place with cafeteria, bar, tea-room and a stage for live music and theatre. The zoo and the planetarium, cinemas and sports facilities offer the approx. 18,000 students who live in Osnabrück opportunities to take well-earned breaks from their studies.

Three Campus-Locations

The main campus is situated in one of the most beautiful parts of town: The university-grounds are located right next to the Botanical Gardens and a recreation area with woods and lakes lies in its immediate vicinity. The departments of agriculture and landscape architecture are located in another part of town which is just as beautiful: The lecture theatres and seminar rooms, the laboratories and green houses are situated in a large park of approx. 5 hectares. A 10 minute bus ride will take you from the city centre to the main campus and you will need 20 minutes to get from downtown Osnabrück to our 'green' departments.

The Institutes for Business Management and Technology, for Communication Management and for Dramatic Arts Education are located right in the centre of Lingen, a town situated approx. 80 km from Osnabrück.

Studying for the Job

At Fachhochschule Osnabrück, you study for the job. Teaching and research are oriented towards the requirements of 'the real world'. This is also mirrored in the qualifications of the teaching staff: Professors and other lecturers have at least 5 years of practical professional experience in addition to their academic-scientific qualification and their pedagogical aptitude. Their profile clearly matches the educational tasks of Universities of Applied Sciences: We enable our students to deal with the requirements of the practical world in a competent, flexible and problem-solving manner.

Put your Skills to the Test!

Two practical semesters lasting 6 months each form an integral part of the studies at Fachhochschule Osnabrück. After the basic study stage (stage I studies) and with the assistance of the university, students find business enterprises or public institutions in the region, in Germany or abroad in which they complete their first internship. During this semester the students are assigned interesting and demanding tasks in which they can apply their scientific knowledge acquired at the University of Applied Sciences and they get an impression of their prospective professional situation. The second practical semester takes place at the end of the fourth year and is usually combined with working on the final project and thesis.

Course Structure

The academic programme is divided into semesters with the winter semester beginning in September and the summer semester beginning in March. The standard course duration is 4 years (8 semesters) and includes 1 or 2 practical semesters spent in industry, business or public institutions.

A degree course at Universities of Applied Sciences is divided into the basic study stage (stage I studies - Grundstudium) which lasts 3 or 4 semesters and ends with an intermediate examination (Vordiplom) and the main study stage (stage II studies - Hauptstudium) which is completed with a final project and thesis (Diplomarbeit). The degree awarded (Diplom-Ingenieur -FH- or Diplom-Kauffrau/Kaufmann -FH-) is a professional qualification and corresponds to the Anglo-Saxon Bachelor's Honours Degree such as B.A. (Hons.), B.Sc. (Hons.), B.Eng. (Hons.).

Following the demand for internationally recognised degrees, an increasing number of programmes leading to a Bachelor's or Master's degree is offered.

Admission Requirements

Approx. 550 foreign students study at Fachhochschule Osnabrück. In order to be enrolled for a degree programme, the following admission requirements have to be met:

higher education entrance qualification after, in general, 13 years of education at secondary level (in case of fewer years at school: proof of having passed the entrance examination at the home university plus one or two years of study depending on the length of schooling) plus (for most degree programmes)

vocational pre-study placement with relevance to the chosen subject (the duration of this placement varies from 6 weeks to 6 months according to the study programme)

The completed application forms together with the required enclosures have to reach Fachhochschule Osnabrück by July 15th at the latest for the winter semester and by January 15th for the summer semester. Application deadline for the degree programme 'International Business and Management' is April 30th.

For foreign students, direct admission to Fachhochschule Osnabrück depends on whether the applicant's secondary school leaving certificate and -if applicable- university certificates are considered to be equivalent to the higher education entrance qualification in Germany. If this is not the case the applicant has to take part in a one-year preparatory course at the 'Studienkolleg' in Hanover.

A good command of the German language, which enables the student to follow the lectures and work independently is an admission requirement. Applicants have to submit one of the following certificates:

Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung des Goethe-Insituts

Großes oder Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom des Goethe-Instituts

Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH)

In isolated instances other language certificates or proofs of a good command of the German language can be accepted.

Foreign students should contact the Admissions Office ('Studierendensekretariat') for further information and application material well before the above mentioned application deadlines.

Financing the Studies

There are no tuition fees for almost all undergraduate programmes at Fachhochschule Osnabrück. But living costs in Germany are relatively high. Monthly expenses of approx. 500.00 € to 600.00 € are to be reckoned with, depending on personal needs and habits. This includes the rent, which may range from 120.00 € to 230.00 €.

Matriculation fees are to be paid each semester. They amount to approx. 130.00 € and include various services (student union, Student Services Osnabrück, semester ticket for public transport, administrative charges).

Fachhochschule Osnabrück is not in a position to award grants. The most extensive scholarship programme is that organised by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service). However, support for a full (4 year) study programme is not possible through the DAAD. For information, foreign applicants should turn to the DAAD, to German foreign diplomatic missions or to other German representatives abroad such as the Goethe-Institut or German lecturing staff placed at universites abroad by the DAAD.

The mobility programmes of the European Union (SOCRATES, LEONARDO etc.) support students from European partner universities for study periods or practical semesters. Students should ask their home university if it is involved in any of these programmes.

In return, the Fachhochschule gets a valuable feedback as to content and development of its study courses.

The research projects are manifold and often have an interdisciplinary approach. They deal with, for instance, automation systems, intelligent research systems in environmental engineering or client-oriented nursing systems.

International Relations

Teaching and research at Fachhochschule Osnabrück are embedded in a network of international relations. The mobility of students and teaching staff play an important role. We participate in the SOCRATES, LEONARDO and TEMPUS programmes of the European Union and use the Europan Credit Transfer System (ECTS) for mutual recognition of credits achieved at partner universities. Close cooperation with the Saxion Hogeschool Enschede, a Dutch University of Applied Sciences just across the border, has led to the creation of 'ENOTIS', the Bi-National Centre of Higher Education Enschede - Osnabrück, which allows the students of both universities to supplement their range of courses with subjects offered by the respective partner institution. But our international relations are not confined to Europe: We cooperate with institutions from the Caribbean to Siberia and from South Africa to China.
