7. Do I need a visa when entering Germany?

A visa is required for all students from non-EU-countries, Switzerland, Canada and the USA. This visa allows you to enter Germany, but it does not permit a stay in Germany. It is temporary and can be valid for different periods of time. Students who want to be enrolled at a German university need a student visa. This has to be applied for at the German embassy or the German consulate in your home country.

The processing of a visa application can take up to 3 months – please apply early! Students should never enter only with a tourist visa as this cannot be altered into a student visa. Enrolment at our university would be impossible if the student had a tourist visa and they would have to leave Germany after 3 months!

8. Where do foreign students have to register after their arrival in Germany?

Every foreign student has to register at the Registration Office for Foreigners in the Town Offices of Osnabrueck (”Stadthaus Osnabrueck”) to apply for a residence permit. Basically, the following documents have to be submitted:

Application form

Application for a residence permit

Valid passport

Copy of proof of health insurance - form (E 128)

9. Is it possible work part-time parallel to the studies? Are there any job offers for students at Fachhochschule Osnabrueck?

If students can demonstrate that their language knowledge, especially in German and English is sufficient, it is possible – with a little bit of luck – to find a part-time job, for example as a typist or stand-in in businesses such as call-centres, factories or restaurants. The job centre has a job agency especially for students. Sometimes, Fachhochschule Osnabrueck needs student workers for special projects. If foreign students staying in Osnabrueck for at least two semesters have a job, they are by law entitled to work up to 90 days per year parallel to their studies. Paid work is only allowed during the semester holidays. The work permit is handed out directly by the Registration Office for Foreigners, thus students do not have to apply for it at the job centre. If students are recipients of a scholarship and would like to work, they would need the permission of the sponsor who grants the scholarship.

Please send duplicates or photocopies of the original documents together with a translation in English or German.
